BENEDIKT DYBOVSKY was born in Belarus, and became famous for his research of the Siberian Baikal.

It's hard to believe, but only 150 years ago, the largest lake on the planet was considered almost uninhabited. Scientists of the luminaries in one voice argued: except for omul and a few other biological species, there is no life there. Only a few exiles did not believe them – and yet they took the risk. The count of open species of fauna went to hundreds! The scientists concluded: "The bottom of Lake Baikal is teeming with such life, which can hardly be found even in the southern seas."

But Dybovsky's discoveries were declared a bluff: the scientific community was in no hurry to part with its misconceptions. And again-struggle, misunderstanding... Life has repeatedly tested this man for strength. But his character was iron, and his views were unwavering.

Both in Siberian exile and at the zenith of his scientific fame, he was true to his credo: "so that all human actions become noble and altruistic, so that they are based on faith in the Truth, sincere love for the Family, the Fatherland, Humanity, the Universe...".
