The festival “People and Environment” started in Irkutsk for the 16 th time

The opening ceremony of the 16 th Baikal International Festival of Documentary and Popular-
Science Films n.a. V.Rasputin «People and Environment» was held in Zvezdnyiy cinematheatre.
Jazz musicians welcomed the guests in the hall and overall design was in the style of 60s of the
XXth century


Also the audience could study the statuettes which would be awarded to the winners of the Festival very
precisely. Each award is decorated with special semi-precious stone, the stand of the award is made of
cedar.

The dance by Artishock team named Troika was performed during the newsreel footage showing on the
screen.
«Letter from Siberia» 1957 by French documentary film maker Chris Marker, from which the documentary
essay genre began, was chosen as the opening film of the Festival this year. The film reflects the
impression of the diversity of Siberia: a distant country "between the Middle Ages and the third
millennium, between the Earth and the Moon, between humiliation and happiness.
