Welcome address by the President of the festival
Sergey Miroshnichenko, director, president of festival «People and Environment»
The more in the 21st century will develop a civilization, the more there will be problems related to the preservation of life on Earth. Nature will become the most vulnerable point, and the responsibility of each people for the land they live in will become greater. Valentin Rasputin, the writer whose name was given to the festival, was always concerned about this point. And we must keep doing this work, explore current issues on the environmental problem both in Russia and abroad. Festival in Irkutsk has already become a place not only for watching films, but also for discussing the problems that arise in the 21st century due to the activity of the people eager to profit, those who lost their roots, whose slogan is: «After us the deluge!» The Festival fulfils a task very important for Siberia: education of young people, involved in the problems of immoral use of natural resources on the planet. This problem has so massive impact that the Government of Russian Federation announced the next year to be the year of ecology, a year when we need to become aware of and understand what we should do to protect the forest, the water, the land of our country. Russia has the largest territory in the world. It's a pity that we have irresponsible attitude towards the land. We used to refer to the fact that it is the public authorities who are to blame for the destruction of nature, but the truth is that each of us must behave moral towards the land on which he live, because the people who set fire to the forest, cut them over and contaminate water of Baikal and Angara - are us or the people who live next to us. Our civilization has entered a stage of development when the nature needs to be not only protect but also restored. Our Festival teaches us to love the wealth of nature, to protect it. I hope this year we will as usually see powerful and talented films which will affect the viewers not only by a problem, but also by the skill and talent.
